Classic & Rare Cast Iron Kilgore TAT (Transcontinental Air Transport) 3 Prop Airplane, circa 1930. Approx: 13.5″ Wings x 11″ Long x 3 High, 2.5 lbs. Nice Creamy Yellow and Blue coloring. Appears all original (please review all pictures). We did not try to clean or alter item in any way. We are not 100% sure of exact date of manufacturing. Since the airplane line (from which this was designed) was discontinued in 1930, it is likely that it is near that date. The TAT as it was called, was short for Transcontinental Air Transport, also called the Tin Goose. The plane & plan behind it played a critical, although short lived role in aviation history. It is an interesting read if you are interested. In short, the TAT was the brain child of Clement Keys (known as the father of commercial aviation in America) who hoped to make cross country air flights commercially viable for passengers in as short of a time as possible. Keys wanted to expand that to passengers and the TAT plane was the first broad scale attempt at it. Keys wisely engaged the consultation and assistance from famed aviation hero Charles Lindbergh in the project and Lindy even flew some of the routes on early flights. This also brought national attention to the idea. Keys also enlisted The Ford Motor Company to make the small fleet of planes, again giving legitimacy to the project. It was powered by three 450 HP engine Pratt & Whitney engines and held up to 15 passengers and could reach speeds of 110 MPH. Its inaugural flight was July 7, 1929. Unfortunately, a number of early accidents including a fatal crash in 1929 killing all passengers, led to a closing of the line in 1930. But the idea had already captured the American imagination and the rest is history. After reorganizing assets and coupling this idea with other aviation projects, it was carried forward by TWA and I think Ford continued to produce the planes for a while, but I stopped reading after that. So, the TAT’s short lived history left very few collectibles, records and other behind in it’s wake. That is likely why the few items that do show up demand such high prices from collectors.
